Aterio’s US Data Center Report – March 2025
After a quieter February, where announced power capacity dipped to 8.9 GW, March roared back—logging 12.2 GW of planned power, nearly catching up to January’s high of 16.4 GW. This rebound signals a strong return of confidence and urgency in the data center space, driven by AI, cloud demand, and hyperscaler CAPEX cycles.
In total, 178 new data center projects were announced in March, representing over 50.1 million square feet of infrastructure and more than 1,200 MW of planned capacity.

📊 7 Key Data Center Insights – April 2025 (Aterio Report)
- Long-Term Demand Reflected in Announcement Volume
March recorded a total of 178 announced data center projects, representing over 1,200 MW of planned power and 50.1 million square feet of data center space. This strong pipeline reflects the industry’s continued momentum in planning large-scale infrastructure to support future demand from HPC, AI, and cloud computing.
- Google’s Expansion into Stillwater, Oklahoma
Satellite imagery analyzed by Aterio confirms that site preparation and ground leveling began in March 2025 at Google’s upcoming $3 billion data center campus in Stillwater, Oklahoma, located at 4982–4622 N Jardot Rd. Known as the Stillwater Google Campus, the project includes Building 1 and Building 2 in its initial phase, with approvals for up to six buildings—each around 300,000 square feet—across a 400-acre site
- Major Hyperscaler Influence
March saw a notable surge in project announcements from undisclosed providers, accounting for 62% of all activity—totaling 125 projects, over 7,500 MW of planned power, and 34.4 million square feet of data center space. While the companies behind this projects remain unnamed, the scale and timing strongly suggest hyperscaler involvement, aligned with their significant CAPEX commitments.
- Skybox Datacenters as a Key Future Capacity Provider
Skybox Datacenters accounted for 24 project announcements in March, totaling 3,000 MW of planned power and 9.6 million square feet of data center space—roughly 25% of total announced capacity for the month. This positions Skybox as a major contributor to future hyperscale and HPC infrastructure backed by Prologis, a global leader in industrial real estate.
- STACK Infrastructure’s Consistent Expansion Approach
STACK Infrastructure announced 11 projects in March, totaling 516 MW of planned power and 2.76 million square feet of data center space. STACK also secured $4 billion in green financing.
- Preparation for AI and Generative Computing Workloads
OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, noted that overwhelming usage of ChatGPT’s image generation feature strained GPU capacity, leading to temporary rate limits. Similarly, viral trends like the Studio Ghibli-style AI art boom pushed ChatGPT-4o usage to record levels, again exposing infrastructure limitations. These real-world GPU bottlenecks are driving developers to act.
- AI Infrastructure Partnership Expands to $100 Billion Investment Potential
March witnessed a significant influx of capital from institutional investors into AI and data center infrastructure, underscoring robust confidence in the sector’s long-term growth. Notably, BlackRock, in partnership with Global Infrastructure Partners, Microsoft, and MGX, expanded its AI Infrastructure Partnership by welcoming NVIDIA and xAI.
